2011 Auckland Freestyle Champs with a twist!

It was a great day for the 2011 Auckland Freestyle Champs. Due to the forecast we decided to run this years event as a Freestyle/Wave comp and we certainly weren't disappointed.

25-30 Knots NE at Takapuna with a decent swell rolling in. 12 competitors in total incl Tim and Eric who came all the way up from Wellington. Good effort boys!

Great to see that nearly half of the fleet were juniors 18 years and under. The youngest competitor, Maija at only 11 years of age showed everyone that she is determined to get to the top over the next couple of years. So watch out everyone!

We managed to run a total of 5 heats just after the tide started to run out and the waves got a bit cleaner and nicer. First 3 rounds were 20 min and the winners and losers final where 15 min heats each.

The judges scored wave and freestyle manoeuvres 50/50 so everyone could make the most out of the conditions today. Close to the boat ramp the water was smooth enough to see some great freestyle action to impress the judges but also the hardcore spectators. Jumping was a bit hard today with the wind angle but we still saw some forwards, backwards and obviously some good crashes too.

Big smiles from all competitors allround despite the pouring rain that just wouldn't stop. After the comp we had sausages and beer in the back Thomas' van as a warm up and most sailors headed straight back out for some free sailing to make the most of the day.

A big thanks to all the helpers again, esp Thomas, Tim and Merylin for getting absolutely soaked operating the flags and the judging.

More information:	We decided to come back - bigger and better! AND Distribution will have the latest boards and sails from Gaastra/Vandal/Tabou on site for demo. Also we'll bring a couple of teamriders to assist, answer questions etc. A race clinic and (weather permitting) a fun slalom event will be run, so come around for some fun, bbq and drinks We will certainly bring the whole range of SUP's as well so we can even have some fun on the water if the wind doesn't cooperate.

2010 Freestyle Nationals

The first New Zealand Freestyle Nationals were held in Auckland from Oct. 1. - Oct 3. 2010. The forecast, even a couple of days ahead, showed a promising SW flow without any rain on the weather maps and two days with 16-20 knots SW, bingo!

Auckland Windsurfing Challenge to raise funds for Cancer Society
1 August 2010
Auckland windsurfers are planning a challenge to sail from Takapuna to Great Barrier Island to raise funds for the Cancer Society. Sometime in September (weather permitting) 3 sailors will attempt the approximately 60 nautical miles (110km) journey.

WHEN: Standby period starts 01. May 2010 (Sat/Sun possible event days, except Sun 16)

WHERE: possible locations are Pt. Chev, Takapuna, Shoalbay, Bucklands, Spot TBA on the comp day

First Family Fun Day in Auckland.... and what a day it was.

WHERE: Bayswater Yacht Club Park
Sun, wind, great venue and good crowd. Lots of new faces and heaps of people just stopping by with a picnic and whatching what was happening on the water. What more do we need.
Smiles wherever you looked but especially on the kids faces, that's what the sport needs. Defenitely not the last event of that kind.
Wicked feedback on the new Vandal sails and Tabou boards, the brand new Stitch was nonstop on the water - turning some heads

This year’s event showcased the best conditions Taranaki can offer, with an insanely epic, mast high, down-the-line, Pungarehu extravaganza!
The warm-up for TWC09 began early on the Friday with a convoy of eager beaver Wellingtonians (led by Chris Brown) leaving our nation’s capital at 5 am. By 9 am they were at the holy grail of NZ wavesailing: Pungarehu. With the tide coming in the hordes hit the water and by 11 am there were around 15 – 20 sailors catching the mast high sets consistently rolling in to the beach. The wind picked up throughout the morning and by midday it was blowing 5.0 and small board weather. Perfect!

As in the previous year, the 2009 Auckland Freestyle Champs was run again on stand by to get the best conditions possible so the stand by period was set for the whole month of May with each Saturday and Sunday being a possible event day.
